This is a big, big week for advances in transportation technology. In the Nevada desert, for the first time, the start-up Hyperloop One completed a public testing of the electric propulsion system that they claim is a total game changer. According to the company, the Hyperloop will be able to move anything anywhere, and it will be able to do so with a speed and efficiency never seen before.
The test was a success. On the half-mile track, the pod reached 116 mph (187km/h) in 1.1 seconds. While reports say that they will eventually be able to travel over 700 mph, it was impressive for a demo. Rob Lloyd, CEO, said in a statement that the company is working alongside partners in an attempt to, “redefine the future of transportation, providing a more immediate, safe, efficient and sustainable high-speed backbone for the movement of people and things.”
There are still certainly hurdles for companies like Hyperloop One and it’s competitor, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. They’re making huge claims: complication-free travel at rates of speed that are presently difficult to imagine. For example, their futuristic reality includes traveling from Los Angeles to San Francisco in less than 40 minutes. But beyond the obvious hurdles, both Los Angeles based companies have to deal with issues such as land rights, and the existing transportation players.
However, those invested in the technology seem, across the board, to be of the opinion that truck, plane, and train companies are in for a rude awakening due to the cost-effectiveness and the unmatched performance of the Hyperloop. For those reasons, they optimistically push forward towards a future that previously only existed in the realm of fiction.
